This story began with the old owner of the Lakers, the Buss Family who decided to sell the Lakers in a deal announced on Wednesday, (6/18) local time. The franchise value of the legendary club is now at 10 billion USD, breaking the record for the sale of the most expensive basketball team in the United States.
The story of the Lakers franchise transaction itself began when Jerry Bush bought the Lakers from Jack Kent Cooke in 1979 for 67,5 million USD. After that, control of the Lakers was continued by Jeanie Buss after Jerry died in 2013. The Lakers won 11 championship titles during that era or 65% of the total 17 championship titles they collected since joining the NBA under the name Minneapolis Lakers (1949-1960).
After holding a majority stake in the Lakers for almost half a century, the Buss family finally sold the Lakera franchise to Walter for 10 billion USD. Even so, the Buss family still has a minority stake in the Lakers, namely 15 percent.
