Police Release 301 Protesters Against Regional Election Law Who Were Previously Detained

progresifjaya.id, JAKARTA – The police have released hundreds of people who were detained during a demonstration that ended in chaos rejecting the revision of the Regional Election Law at the MPR/DPR RI. Not a single person was detained for this action.

Kabid Humas of Polda Metro Jaya, Kombes Pol Ade Ary Syam Indradi in his official statement said, that in total there were 301 people who were detained for the demonstration rejecting the revision of the Regional Election Law before being released again.

“In Jakarta Barat, 105 people have been sent home. Then in Jakarta Timur 143 people have finished their statements, and have also been sent home. In Jakarta Pusat, three people related to the burning of a patrol car at the Pejompongan Police Post, Benhil, Tanah Abang, Jakarta Pusat have also been sent home,” said Kombes Pol Ade Ary, Saturday, (24/8).

In the Ditreskrimum of Polda Metro Jaya, continued Kombes Pol Ade Ary, there were also 50 people arrested, six of whom were children and one was a woman. All of them have also been released.

Kombes Pol Ade Ary said, that they were arrested for carrying out actions that caused disturbances to security and order during the demonstration. Among them was damaging the gate of the DPR building.

“Then several officers were also injured due to violent actions by the individuals who were secured,” he said.

As is known, the Subdit Kamneg Ditreskrimum Polda Metro Jaya had previously questioned 50 participants in the demonstration rejecting the revision of the Pilkada Law in front of the MPR/DPR RI building which ended in chaos. As many as 19 of them were named suspects but not detained. They were only required to report.

Of the 19 people named as suspects, said Kombes Pol Ade Ary again, eight of them were students.  One person was charged with Article 170 of the Criminal Code related to the destruction of facilities. Meanwhile, 18 other people were charged with Article 212 of the Criminal Code and/or Article 214 of the Criminal Code and/or 218 of the Criminal Code.

“Based on the facts of their actions and their respective roles, they are suspected of having committed acts of violence against our officers together. And also the third article was disregarding the orders of our officers in the field during the process of conveying opinions and it was finished. After being asked by our officers to disperse, they did not disperse. Instead, they resisted by throwing wood and bamboo at the officers,” said Kombes Pol Ade Ary again.

He also said, that even though they were threatened with a maximum prison sentence of 4 years, the 19 suspects were still released on bail from their families. They were only required to report until the examination process was complete.

“All of them were also released by following the rules of the Criminal Code. So no one violated the rules of procedure,” he emphasized. (Bembo)
